In 2024, several projects funded through our Preservation Matching Grants program were successfully completed — thanks to the generous support of The 1772 Foundation. These funds are allocated to non-profit organizations that own and maintain some of Rhode Island's most significant historic buildings. They have demonstrated their dedication to preserving our state’s heritage.
Highlights from 2024 include exterior restoration of the iconic Fleur de Lys Building in Providence, the former Crompton Free Library undertaken by the Pawtuxet Valley Preservation Society, the headquarters of the Rhode Island Historical Society, and the Wilcox Barn in Westerly.
Additionally, the program supported several nonprofits that provide safe and affordable housing in Rhode Island. For example, House of Hope in Warwick, which offers housing for formerly un-housed individuals, made a detailed conditions assessment of its Fair House Building to facilitate long-range planning for its stewardship. One Neighborhood Builders, which manages a portfolio of affordable housing in Providence’s West End, carried out a transformative exterior restoration of an 8-unit affordable apartment building.
Preserve Rhode Island is thrilled that we were able to help these resources reach communities across the state. We have invited non-profits to apply for the 2025 round and will announce the grants in May.
