WHAT WE DO
Preserve Rhode Island is the only statewide non-profit working to protect historic places through advocacy, stewardship, and preservation programs. Our mission is to protect and activate historic places for the benefit of all Rhode Islanders.
From one end of the state to the other, historic buildings and unique places shape the distinct character of the cities and towns of Rhode Island. They connect us to a heritage that has been evolving for almost four centuries.
From our base in an 18th-Century farm house in Providence, we work statewide with local groups on preservation challenges large and small. Preservation is not just “saving” old buildings and defending open spaces.
Preservation is...
Finding productive uses for old buildings
Offering guidance and support to local groups defending threatened places
Advocating for legislation, including historic tax credits, that revitalizes historic buildings and strengthens our economy
Demonstrating best stewardship practices as we care for our historic buildings
Engaging the community through the Lippitt House Museum to connect visitors to Rhode Island's diverse history
